Here is an excerpt:
Q: Why do you think Elena was so upset about seeing the photo of Katherine and how much she looked like her?
Nina: I think that it’s shocking. It’s one thing to have a crazy ex-girlfriend and come to terms with that. It’s like, “Okay, you have a past? That’s fine.” It’s another thing to look identical to the crazy ex-girlfriend. I think Elena will always feel like, “Why are you dating me? Do you want to replace her with me? Isn’t that selfish of you?” There’s a lot going on. You don’t want to look like someone else, especially an ex-girlfriend.
Q: Do you ever play Elena and Katherine in the same day?
Nina: Playing Katherine takes so long. Getting into the character, there’s the hair and make-up process, and just getting dressed, alone, takes half an hour because there’s corsets and pantaloons. There’s so many layers that it takes half an hour to put the outfits on, so I couldn’t play both in one day. It’s very good because it takes a lot of energy. When I’m in that corset for 17 hours, at the end of the day, I feel like I’ve done a work-out. I remember looking at my stomach and thinking, “I should get myself a corset for every day.” It really tones you up. You’re sucking in, all day.

Q: The show is a vampire story, a love story and a historical drama. Do you think that’s why it appeals to fans?
Paul: I think it’s brought in a lot of fans because there’s an undercurrent of something deeper. The thing about The Vampire Diaries is, if you watch it as an adult, it’s because it really is engaging, smart writing. Kevin Williamson has this dialogue that can cater to a youthful, smart audience, but as an adult, you can watch it and find yourself riveted and have no idea why.
Q: What did you think about getting the role of a vampire?
Paul: It was a huge undertaking. I was a little nervous because there’s a lot to think about. It’s, “Okay, how do I encompass 160 years of knowledge in my brain when I’m 27?” I’m thinking about the wisdom of my grandfather, who’s 80 and probably my hero.
Q: Growing up, did you ever want to be a vampire?
Paul: To be honest with you, I’d never thought about it. But, when I read about 160-year-old guy who was stuck in a kid’s body, I thought, “Well, this is going to be the most challenging role of my life, if I get it,” and it has been. Try encompassing 160 years of knowledge into your brain. My grandfather is 80 and my hero. He’s the wisest man I’ve ever met in my life, and I’m playing a character that’s twice his age. Stefan has been through the Civil War. He’s been through every fad — the ‘60s, the ‘70s, the ‘80s, the grunge ‘90s, everything.

IESB: Had you been a fan of the vampire genre before this, or is this just totally new to you? Can you understand the huge appeal of it?
Steven: I understand the huge appeal of it. I was more into the older vampire films than any of the modern ones that have come out. Though they’re all very good, I just haven’t watched them all that much. My favorite one is Gary Oldman’s Dracula. He’s probably one of my all-time favorite actors.
IESB: Earlier this season, there were some great moments between you and Kayla Ewell. Since you all started the series together, how difficult was it to lose her?
Steven: Honestly, that was awful. She’s a very talented actress, she’s beautiful and we all fell in love with her a little bit. It was really tough to see her go. It was purely for the storyline, which sucks. I think the way they did it was beautiful, but we were definitely very, very bummed to see her go

In “The Vampire Diaries,” it seems like Stefan and Damon are in for a bit of a power struggle. What’s it like working with Ian Somerhalder on the scenes where the two brothers are at each other’s throats? You guys have great chemistry together.
We do have a natural chemistry, because I adore Ian. When we’re acting together, it’s like a tennis match. It’s always nice to play with someone who can hit the ball back to you, you know? And I hope he feels the same way about me. He always gives me something new to react to or to feed off of.
The dynamic of the characters is so interesting because they love each other, but they hate each other. I don’t have a brother, I have sisters, but I would imagine it’s very love-hate. It’s just exaggerated to the nth degree for Stefan and Damon. As the season progresses, they develop more love for each other, but they keep doing things to make each other distrustful, then we go back to ground zero and start again. There’s always this thing in Stefan’s head where he hopes that one day Damon can just be as normal and functioning as possible.

After getting his gig on “Vampire Diaries,” Steven was about to read the first book in the L.J. Smith series when he found out that his character, Jeremy, a troubled teen, was originally a 4-year-old girl. “I asked one of my little girl cousins who had already read it and she kind of gave me a look,” he said. “I got the gist of it from [them], they were so excited, they started jumping up and down on their beds. It was really cute.” (All together now: awwwwwww.)

Here is an excerpt: (SPOILERS)
Deep down, Damon yearns for Katherine. “That’s his girl,” he said. “That’s all he wants. It’s love. Look, I know it’s so trite, but it is that old adage, ‘Love conquers all.’ It’s what drives us in every way shape and form.”
“Damon misses his brother and his girl and he wants them both back in his life,” he added. “He’s waited 150 years to get his girl back. He finds her at some point fairly soon.”
Once Katherine does come back in the picture, though, Somerhalder says he’s unsure if Damon will actually get the girl, “but I just know he wants her and he has an insatiable thirst to find her. He’s not going to stop until that thirst is quenched.”
