Stefan is a handsome and charming boy who shows an interest in Elena Gilbert. But Stefan has a dark secret, he is a 200 year old vampire and so is his brother Damon. Unlike Damon, Stefan has given up the evil and violent vampire lifestyle. He Elena are dating and in love. He is trying to come to peace with being a vampire.

At the end of season 2 Stefan, in order to save his brother Damon, leaves with original vampire Klaus. Klaus is evil and forces Stefan to be evil too. While running with Klaus, in order to find ways for him to create more hybrids, Stefan reverts to his old ripper days when humanity was the last thing on his mind. Klaus tries to force Stefan to kill Elena, but Stefan fights his influence and refuses.

As a result Klaus becomes furious and compels Stefan and strips away his humanity. Klaus leaves Stefan in Mystic Falls to watch Elena.
