Collider has an interview with Kevin Williamson.

Here is an excerpt:

Question: Why did you finally decide that it was the right time to have Damon (Ian Somerhalder) and Elena (Nina Dobrev) share a real kiss?

Kevin Williamson: Well, we would have pulled it off sooner, if we could have. We felt like it was time. We just had to wait for the audience to truly respond to the kiss. We have our Elena fans, who have been craving it, but those fans would also reject it, out of hand. There are people who want Stefan (Paul Wesley) and Elena forever, and they were going to reject the kiss, so it had to be an honest thing for Elena to do. We had to make it real for her, and we had to tiptoe towards it. If we hadn’t, you would have hated Elena. Stefan had to take that turn, so she turned her attention to the one person who’s showing her the love, and she’s tempted by him. Who wouldn’t be? He’s a vampire. He has a power over her, and he’s being really good to her. And, he’s being tormented by it, too. In a weird way, he’s never going to let anything bad happen to his brother.

It’s a great love story because everybody loves everybody. No matter how much they hate each other, everybody loves everybody. It’s a perfect three-way, if they would all just come together. If they could all get along, it would be a hot time. Look, we’re in our third season. I don’t think we have a lot of new audience members, at this point. It is our fans. They’re the ones that are keeping us on the air. They’re our bread and butter. Even beyond that, we just want to be honest to the characters. You can’t just have Elena jump into bed with someone because that’s what the writer wants them to do. You have to earn it, and the character has to do it. It took us this long to earn it. From the second episode of this show, when she walked into the Salvatore mansion and she met Damon for the first time and he kissed her hand, that’s when it began. It just took us two and a half years to say, “I think they can kiss. We’ve earned it.”

Here is an excerpt:

THR: What were conversations like casting a pivotal character like Klaus?

Williamson: I wanted someone who felt European, who felt old world. Clearly, I went to the accents. [Laughs] Joseph Morgan came in and he nailed it. He had the sense of humor that I wanted Klaus to have. The way we always described [the character] is, “Klaus can out-Damon Damon.” We teased this season between Damon and Klaus, but there’s so much material, it’s an open minefield next year between Damon, Stefan and Klaus. The originals, here they come.

What’s in the future for Caroline and Tyler’s relationship? Will werewolf/vampire tensions drive them apart?

Yes, 100 percent. In the very next episode, things begin to unfold that don’t bode well for their budding relationship. Tyler starts asking questions and we’ll see that blow open. And don’t forget, there’s Matt waiting over there in the middle. So there’s a little triangle going between a human, a vampire, and a werewolf. Tyler got through his transformation, she was there for him. They sort of have this kinship now, of this curse. And now we take it to the next level and play it out. It’s very tragic.

Thanks Eliza!

PopWrap:
First of all, I have to commend you on Tyler’s transformation. I genuinely felt his pain.

Kevin Williamson:
We had always come at this knowing it would be a very, very painful process. That’s why we added the tape last week – so he learned how much agony he was in store for. I mean, it’s a brutal, excruciating five hours.

Can you talk a little bit more about the flashbacks that are coming up? Is there any chance we’re going to go back any further than the 19th Century?

JP: Oh yeah. In fact, let’s see, the episode that we start shooting on Tuesday is set, if I’m not mistaken, around 1490. We talked a little bit about that in the panel wanting to show Katherine’s origin story, and it’s cool.

KW: 1492 in Bulgaria. We go back in time and show a lot about how Katherine became who she was. We answer a lot of questions, basically. I don’t know if anyone’s interested about the doppelganger, or how did the line continue if it ended with her. She’s the Petrova. We get into the Petrova line of it all. So we kind of go down that road and we sort of flashback to 1492 Bulgaria. We show how she started, where she went, why they wanted her, why she was necessary to the story of the vampires.

She admits that occasionally, she has to force herself to take a step away from the computer. “All these girls are like ‘Damon and Elena forever! Delena! Ahh! Oh, nothing on the show is working except for Damon and Elena!’ and then you take a step back and you’re like wait, no, stay off Twitter. “
