Q. “Vampire Diaries” really appeals to a younger, female audience. Do you think older audiences will catch on with the show as well?
A. It’s a lot darker and more edgier than other vampire genre shows out there, and just a lot of other shows period. I think that there is a lot of room for a more mature audience. Yeah, absolutely, just because we’re in high school doesn’t mean we only have high school issues. There are episodes that are a matter of life and death.
What’s your character like?
Kayla: Vicki is a really slutty high school student — she’s a troublemaker. She’s always popping pills and messing around with guys in the woods.
Who have you bonded with on the show?
Kayla: Ian Somerhalder, who is the most experienced actor in the cast. He’s like a big brother to us. Steven McQueen, who plays my love interest, has become a good friend of mine too.
Here is an excerpt from the interview:
PopWrap: The ratings for your show have been amazing, what was your reaction after the pilot did so well?
Nina Dobrev: I screamed. We obviously have a lot of night shoots, so I woke up at 2 pm and had all these emails on my Blackberry with subjects like, “highest ratings in CW history.” I woke up my roommate, Kayla Ewell who plays Vicki, and we screamed again. Then we did a happy dance, just jumping around in circles. Our neighbors must’ve thought we were crazy … or being murdered.
PW: You mentioned night shoots, how are you handling them?
Nina: It’s hard because your internal clock gets thrown for a loop — we shot till 5 am last night and I’m going to work now [ed note: it was 1:30 pm]. But I’m not complaining — going to work is not like going to work. I get to do stunts, wear cool makeup, get bloodied and be around people I love — basically my life is like the merry-go-round at a theme park. It’s so fun.
