Sara Interview

Cast and Characters, Interviews

1

Sara Canning has an interview with The Province. She talks about her acting career.

Here is an excerpt:

While filming Black Field, Canning found out that the CW network had agreed to film 13 episodes of Vampire Diaries, which stars Toronto’s Nina Dobrev as an orphaned teen romantically torn between two vampire brothers.

“Then it was anxiously waiting to make sure they were going to keep my character,” says Canning, who plays the teen’s young aunt, “which is totally weird because Nina’s only a year younger than me.”

The role marks a lighter turn for Canning. “I get to play with being this quirky aunt. Her sister has died and she’s taking care of her sister’s kids, but usually the lighter stuff happens with my character.”

Paul Interview

Cast and Characters, Interviews

Teen Vogue has an interview with Paul Wesley.

Here is an excerpt:

by Lindsay Talbot October 12, 2009
paul-wesley-tv-pata.jpg”I hate to admit this,” Paul Wesley says, “but I’ve never really owned a TV.” It’s quite a confession, given that the actor’s appeared in more than two dozen small-screen series, including 24, The O.C., and C.S.I. “I’ve had cameos on some cool shows,” he says. “But it’s nice to now be doing something that I’m involved in from the beginning.”

He’s talking, of course, about The Vampire Diaries–the new CW drama based on L.J. Smith’s bestselling books. Starring as sensitive vampire Stefan Salvatore, Paul’s a natural on camera, but getting into character was challenging: “I’m 150 years old but trapped in a teenager’s body, I have these supernatural abilities, and whenever my hormones go out of whack”–like, for example, when he sees his love interest, Elena (Nina Dobrev)–”my eyes turn bloodred, and I get all pale and veiny.” He could, however, relate to Stefan’s reclusiveness: “I wasn’t some weird loner in school, but I definitely wasn’t invited to any of the cool parties,” the New Jersey native, who started missing classes after he was cast on a soap opera sophomore year, says. “Girls didn’t like me that much–I didn’t even go to my prom.”

Paul didn’t just draw from his own experience; he also did his research. “The minute I was cast, I plowed through all the books.” And he made a point of not reading or watching Twilight. “I didn’t want to be influenced by it at all,” he says. But the other bloodsuckers were hard to avoid: New Moon and The Vampire Diaries were both being shot in Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada, last April. “The cast was staying at our hotel–we saw them everywhere and hung out all the time. They’re actually really nice people.” And while critics have been quick to call the show a Twilight spin-off (though, for the record, Smith’s books were written before Stephenie Meyer’s), Paul, who recently relocated to Atlanta, Georgia, to continue filming, disagrees: “They have vampires and high school romance in common, but that’s about it.”

THE VAMPIRE DIARIES

Back Stage Actor2Watch
has an interview with Katerina Graham. She talks about acting.

Read the interview here.

Here is an excerpt from the interview:

ACTOR2WATCH: What was your first real break as an actor?

KATERINA GRAHAM: This maybe? I had a few little ones. I didn’t really get a big break. I don’t know if that necessarily applies to me but I did “Movie Surfers” when I was like 13 or 14 for the Disney Channel when I would interview different people from different films and that got me a lot of recognition.

Fanta was a big campaign that got me some recognition. It’s always like after these shows are finished, you’re sort of back to where you began, back to the auditioning room.

So I feel like “Vampire Diaries” is the biggest thing that I’ve had that’s turning into something beyond whatever I’ve experienced before. But I don’t know if I’ve ever really gotten a big break before this. I feel like I’ve had opportunities and then they’re gone.

Zach Interview

Cast and Characters, Interviews

1

PopWrap has an interview with Zach Roerig.

Read the entire interview here.

Here is an excerpt from the interview:

PopWrap: Had you read “The Vampire Diaries” books before coming on the show?
Zach:
I was always a fan of vampires, but I hadn’t read the books. Fortunately, though, I have a little sister and a bunch of girl cousins that had read the books, so they pretty much filled me in when I first got the audition.

PopWrap: What was it about Matt that attracted you to the role?
Zach:
Well, on “Friday Night Lights,” Cash started out as kind of a nice guy but then turned out to be, you know, not a nice guy. And other characters I’ve played have always in the end just been kinda walking on the wrong side of the line. Matt was a chance to just really play a nice guy. I just wanted to get a chance to show that.

PW: He’s nice now, but will he stay nice if/when he discovers that his ex-girlfriend’s new boyfriend is a vampire?
Zach:
You know, I think as soon as Matt figures out that they’re vampires, something’s gonna happen. He’s a pretty level-headed guy, but he’s also the hero so, you know, who knows. Who knows what he’ll do.

Zach Interview

Cast and Characters, Interviews

1

Fancast has an interview with Zach Roerig.

Read the entire interview here.

Here is an excerpt from the interview:

Why is Matt still so drawn to Elena?

I think it’s just one of those cases where he doesn’t know any different. Elena’s the only girlfriend he’s ever had. She’s his childhood best friend who was the first for everything.

Has playing a non-vampire given you vampire envy?

When it first started out I was totally content not playing a vampire just because there’s a lot of extra contacts and make-up involved. But now I think it would be kind of fun to play a vampire. Ian Somerhalder makes it look like a blast.
