The Hollywood Reporter: Were you shocked when you read the script for the season premiere?
Ian Somerhalder: I was not surprised at all. You open up the script and the first half of the page you’re standing naked. I spent a couple of days naked on set which is a really great bonding thing with myself and the crew. In season three, we’ve hit our stride. We are firing on all pistons. We know that we have to make this season better than the last two. We just need to.

Question: With Stefan having departed, what role will Damon have in Season 3? How will he change?
IAN SOMERHALDER:
Honestly, it’s a television show and these characters evolve. I would rather just remain the bad-ass dude that gets all the great lines and rips everybody’s heads off. That’s what I would prefer. I know it sounds a little sadistic, but it makes for a better character. But, I don’t think that’s the way life is. Kevin Williamson basically sat me down and said, “Just shut up and listen. Life is not one-dimensional. We change.” It’s that push-pull. He’s fighting against what he truly is, and that’s what makes the story dynamic. He is an anti-hero. He doesn’t know how to do all this stuff, so I think he’s going to have some trials and tribulations.
Ultimately, he’s not happy with the way things have turned out. He tried, for two seasons, to get his brother to do what he wanted him to do, which is to be what he is. He wants them to just eat and destroy everything in their paths. Now, Stefan is running around with a guy that Damon hates and tried to kill him. He’s effectively left Damon in this town with this girl who’s 150 years younger than he is, that he’s in love with, but can’t have because she doesn’t want him and it’s his brother’s girl. He’s just sitting there, thinking to himself, “This sucks!” But, I think he’s going to rise to the occasion. He’ll have the same grin on his face, if he’s ripping your head off or saving a kitten. He feels the same way about both things.

Is Damon feeling a little jealous of Klaus, perhaps? “Stefan’s left Damon here in Mystic Falls. Now he’s got to protect this girl that he loves, but that he can’t have, because it’s his brother’s girl — and even though it’s Damon, he can’t do that to his brother,” Somerhalder says. “And even if he could, she doesn’t love him anyway. She wants his brother. So when he finally sees Stefan, it’s like, ‘I tried for two seasons to get you to do this and now you’re off running around with this idiot.’ That’s all Damon wanted in Season 1, was his brother to run around with him and munch on sorority girls and bring down the house wherever they went, and Stefan said no. Now he’s left Damon here all by himself, to fend for himself, and protect this girl who is 150 years his junior. He’s not happy about it.”

How will he behave with Stefan gone?
IS: I think he’s going to rise to the occasion, and I think he’s going to have fun doing whatever it is. I mean, this is the guy that, whether he’s ripping someone’s head off or saving a kitten, he has the exact same grin on his face. He feels the same way about either one of those things. It’s the thing that we were doing in season one, which is that push-pull, you know. It’s like the alcoholic in the bar, how difficult that is. These guys are natural killers, that’s what they do. If you put a mouse or a cricket in front of a kitten or cat, they’re not going to just watch it, they’re going to play with it. It’s built in to the framework of their being. I think that push-pull is really what makes dynamic storytelling. Stefan has that push-pull with Klaus. He tried to save his brother, yet ultimately he’s compelled and he’s going along with the whole thing. Damon has the push-pull of wanting to destroy everything in his path and needing to protect this girl that he loves, and Elena has the push-pull of many things, poor thing — she’s being pulled from every limb. But she gets something from Damon that she doesn’t get from Stefan. They laugh, they throttle each other, they bicker. There’s actually a line in the next episode where Alaric even says, “What are you guys, 12?” Because they have this kind of cute banter thing happening, and I think it’s cool. We’re going to start seeing these different sides to these different characters, but if people are expecting Damon to be this wearing-his-heart-on-his-sleeve hero character — ain’t happening.
