While filming Black Field, Canning found out that the CW network had agreed to film 13 episodes of Vampire Diaries, which stars Toronto’s Nina Dobrev as an orphaned teen romantically torn between two vampire brothers.

The role marks a lighter turn for Canning. “I get to play with being this quirky aunt. Her sister has died and she’s taking care of her sister’s kids, but usually the lighter stuff happens with my character.”
