How did you end up in The Vampire Diaries?
I desperately wanted it. My girlfriend and I were in the desert in Vegas, and I realized I’d missed this meeting. My agent called me back and said, “They need you there at 11 in the morning, having memorized nine pages of the script.” It’s now 9 o’clock at night in Vegas. We got up very early and I drove across the desert while she slept. I taped my pages together; that’s how I worked on the material.

“I had to work so hard to get this role… that when I did finally get it and I got on set, it was sort of one of these things where I just felt so challenged that I almost never settled in and went ‘OK, I can enjoy this. I can relax,’” Wesley, who is currently filming the sixth “Vampire Diaries” episode, said. “He’s a very complex character… and I’m starting to really figure him out.

“People are really responding to Stefan and I’m just now starting to go, ‘This is nice, this feels good, this feels really like, nice to have people appreciate this character,’” he added.

How did your role on Vampire Diaries come about?
I found out about the meeting about nine or ten o’clock — I was in Las Vegas — and I had to be there at 11 a.m. and I hadn’t even read the material. So I literally taped my sides together and drove across the desert at, you know, five in the morning while my girlfriend slept. And that’s how I worked on the material, driving, just memorizing. It’s funny because that’s exactly what I did for The Rules of Attraction many years ago. I remember that feeling of going, Wow, again I’m doing this.

Was there something about playing the evil brother that appealed to you?
Yeah, Damon has a lot of fun. Obviously we can deem him as evil by virtue of his actions, but going further and not judging him for them [laughs], I’ve never really played anyone who was that fun. There’s something about showing up to work every day and not taking yourself so seriously — there’s a certain amount of levity that comes with that. And it’s refreshing.

Let’s start with the tough question – do we really need any more vampires?
I’d say no, but I’d also say you do need this show because it’s not what you’d expect it to be. There’s a lot that happens, it’s very exciting, and you have to watch every single episode because it’s not a slow moving show at all, there’s crazy stuff that goes down.

Crazier than playing baseball with Edward Cullen?
Yes. I think our story edges [vampires] up a little bit, and it’s more relatable to our generation because there are so many different kinds of characters in our story. Also, we have a lot of time to build the situations. It’s not like, we have an hour and a half and tada, there’s vampires! In the first episode, nobody even knows about vampires.

Are they the same kind of vampires as in True Blood?
Nope, not at all. We don’t get to be as crazy as True Blood, but it’s interesting to compare the different shows. We do that all the time in rehearsal, asking what does it mean to turn into a vampire? Like, we literally went to the writers saying, “What are our vampires?”

Vicki is the bad girl, she’s the slutty one–every small town has one. She has no girlfriends, and sleeps with all the men in her life. Each episode, all the sex, all the drugs revolve around Vicki, it’s fun to play the bad girl! The first time I read the script I knew I wanted to play her—its great to go places as an actress that you don’t allow yourself to go personally.

PopStar: Give us all the juicy details about your character Bonnie Bennett.
Katerina Graham: I play Bonnie Bennett in the show. Bonnie Bennett is psychic and she is also Elena Gilbert’s best friend, they grew up together. She has this foreboding energy about her, in the beginning it is about little intuitions and senses things which I think is so amazing. They are giving her this gift right when vampires come to town. She knows that something is wrong but she can’t put her finger on it. Throughout the show, her powers grow and she actually gets put to the test on a couple of things. It is a great character; she has this hippie style, very fun, innocent and very fun to play.
