With Jeremy (Steven R. McQueen) seeing the ghosts of his dead girlfriends, will that affect his mental state?

WILLIAMSON: The thing with Jeremy is that, when we started the show, he was dealing with the death of his parents and he was on the wrong track. It will be interesting to see how he responds to seeing dead people and what that means. The first six episodes really do dive into trying to understand what’s going on with him. He died for an hour, and something happened in that hour that has allowed him to see these dead people. And, what are they, actually? Are they ghosts? Ghosts haunt you either for revenge, or because they love you or are trying to come to peace with you, or they’re trying to warn you or tell you something. He’s got to figure out exactly what is going on and what they’re going to try to tell him.

SPOILERS

After being forced to embrace his dark side, the fight for Stefan Salvatore’s soul (or whatever it is that kept him so docile in the first two seasons) will be a driving force behind the new season. Williamson reveals: “He just goes crazy this season. But it’s an incremental change. It’s not just The Ripper — it’s a whole arc and we go through every single beat of it. It changes all along the way. The fun of this season will be watching Stefan go through this intense and bloody journey. Very bloody.”

“Just because we’re putting her with Damon doesn’t mean they’re going to end up together. And it doesn’t mean they’re going to get together,” Williamson told TVLine at the Television Critics Association Summer Press Tour, when we pressed him about how anxious he plans to make Elena/Stefan fans.

A very bad man is coming to The Vampire Diaries, and his name Stefan. Ripper Stefan.

After two seasons of living his life as Saint Stefan (as Damon likes to call him), Elena’s good-hearted boyfriend did the unthinkable to save his brother. Stefan gave himself up to Klaus and drank from a human girl in exchange for the cure — Klaus’ blood — to Damon’s werewolf bite. But the scary fun of what executive producer Julie Plec calls “the Stefan/Klaus roadshow” is just beginning.

One of the first things that I want to see is Klaus, and where is he and where is he with Stefan and what are they up to,” Plec told THR while in San Diego. “As we sit here, we’re shooting that scene right now at a very, very, very rural farmhouse out in the middle of nowhere. And it’s the opening of the season. That’s all I can say: Farmhouse in the middle of nowhere. Dark. Hot.”

“It’s the scene in the teaser: Damon dies,” Williamson joked.

But back to the serious stuff. “We have an opening that’s been inspired by our pilot opening sequence and other things,” Plec said coyly.

Will Bonnie and Jeremy be able to make it work?

KW: We’re telling the story in an interesting way. We’re slowly sort of unveiling what these ghost-like people are. And so it’ll be interesting to see how Bonnie gets in the middle of it and sort of helps him sort of stop seeing dead people. And also they’re his ex-girlfriends. They’re the two other people he’s loved. The only two, in his entire life that he’s loved. It’s a total triangle/quadrangle.

When we last left off with the folks in Mystic Falls, Damon was on his deathbed, Stefan went back to the dark side with Klaus, Elena’s relationship/friend with Damon may have evolved and Jeremy had visions of his ex-lovers. And that’s not even the half of it.

“We wanted to both end the story that we were telling this season and also give the audience a sense of what was going to be coming up and how everything was going to shift and change,” Plec told THR while in San Diego of the show’s second season finale.
