1. Alaric’s a great foil for Damon.
Alaric first teamed up with Damon Salvatore (Ian Somerhalder) to save Damon’s brother Stefan (Paul Wesley); this time the odd pairing will have to protect Mystic Falls — and thus their lost loves — from whatever Johnathan Gilbert (David Anders) has planned for Founder’s Day. As Davis says, “Two guys have a similar goal in life: to find the woman that’s left them for no particular reason. I enjoy the moments when they look at each other with disgust and respect.”

IESB: Alaric Saltzman is such a dark, mysterious character. How much were you told about him when you were cast, and how much have you learned as you’ve gone along?
Matt: I accepted the offer blind. I had no idea what the character was. I didn’t know if I was going to be a vampire, or what. The material I auditioned with wasn’t Alaric. It was scenes from the previous history teacher, before he was killed. I really had no idea what I was getting myself into, but it seemed like an exciting opportunity. The nature of the business, the way it is, I wanted to work, so I said yes. I only knew, when I landed and got a script, and they took me to the set to meet everybody and I started asking questions.

PW: You delivered the biggest shock of the season for me the other week when I thought Damon killed Alaric!
Matt: [laughs] You know, I would have been nervous reading the script if I didn’t know that I had a contract in place. So I felt pretty confident that they wouldn’t kill me.
PW: I like that he’s still extremely mysterious — are we going to learn more about him as season one winds down?
Matt: Oh, absolutely. That’s all going to come to focus starting next week. Like a colossal “bing!” and all his connections to all the other characters, which are very surprising, will come to the surface. I will say that Alaric makes a very unlikely ally in the show.
PW: And I’m hearing the season finale is going to be jam-packed with cliffhangers?
Matt: Oh yeah, absolutely. It’s going to be ridiculous. We haven’t seen the script, but you start to hear the rumblings and from what I’ve been hearing it’s going to be very intense.
