“I can’t talk much about it yet,” says executive producer Julie Plec, “but one of the big surprises is that Katherine comes face to face with Elena.”
Nina’s not the only one who’ll be given a tough acting assignment. Having the look-alike ladies in the same town will also force Ian Somerhalder to play two different sides of Damon. “It’s going to be an emotional rollercoaster for me,” Ian predicts. “Damon, with Katherine, is this youthful wide-eyed fun guy who is so intrigued by her — so different from the maniacal, more mature Damon you see with Elena.”

“I’ve been working in Grand Isle, which is sort of Ground Zero right now,” Ian says. “Basically, the entire area is shut down. Everyone from the waitress who serves you breakfast to the guy who owns the charter boat to the shrimpers – they all literally rely on the ocean to keep their industry going. They’re shaking in their boots right now, because their industry is dead. Think about how frightening it is when you suddenly, though no fault of your own, can’t feed your children or pay your mortgage.”
He continues, “All of this happened due to human error – the error is cutting corners, saving money at the expense of safety measures, and a nonexistent regulatory commission. The [U.S. Minerals Management Service] gets royalties from the oil industry. How is that any kind of regulatory body?”

We got this exclusive dish from Ian Somerhalder on hot new couple Damon and Katherine: “She’s probably going to kick my ass. Katherine is an evil bitch. She’s a narcissistic, crazy bitch.” Ah, pet names. Love is sweet, isn’t it?
Even if Ian gets his butt handed to him next season, you won’t hear him making a peep of protest. “Let’s face it: Nina Dobrev in her underwear—who could complain about that?” We hear ya, Ian. But it’s only fair we see more of you in your underwear, no? An eye for an eye…or something like that.
On the other side of the hot vampire coin is sweet Stefan. But it looks like next season we’ll be seeing a little less “sweet” and a bit more “evil.”
“He is always going to be protective of Elena, but there are times that he is going to be tempted by blood,” Paul dishes. “He’s a vampire and he has malice inside him. I think it would be a mistake to ignore that.”

Steven R McQueen: “Well, you know, obviously I can’t give that much away otherwise they’d kick my ass down there. I can say Jeremy takes a very interesting turn in the upcoming season. His character has hit an all new rock bottom and starts to feel a whole new level of loneliness and emptiness, and starts to turn that against the world.”
You know, I’d like it if he could be happy for one episode though. Your guy is always going through so much.
Steven R McQueen: “Yeah, yeah. Unfortunately he’s always stuck in that Rebel Without a Cause mindset. But you know it’s always a little more fun to play it when you’ve got some serious stuff going on upstairs.”
Poor Jeremy, I want some happiness for him too!!!

JEZ: Which do you enjoy more, being fought over by two hunky vampires or getting to play two different roles?
ND: I love getting to play two roles, because one is such a sweet, nice girl and the other is this crazy, conniving, narcissistic vampire killer. That’s an opportunity that rarely happens on one show. I’ve played nice girls before–Mia Jones of “Degrassi” was a nice girl–but Katherine has an edge to her that I haven’t had a chance to play before, so it’s a challenge that keeps things fresh and exciting.
