At home, Damon finds Stefan writing in his journal. Stefan puts the journal away and Damon pulls out an older journal. One from the 1900’s. After reading a few entries, they both realize that at that time, there also unsolved murders of council members. Damon and Stefan head out to the Mystic Grill to have a drink and talk about the murders happening now.
Knowing that Mayor Lockwood was the head of the Preservation Society, Rebecca meets up with her at the Mystic Grill. Mayor Lockwood informs Rebecca that pretty much all of the old trees were cut down and used to build the town. Rebecca also discovers that the Salvatore’s owned all of the mills around that time too.
Once again, Sheriff Forbes explains to Alaric that there were too many holes in his alibis and that it was just too hard not to overlook the fact that all of the murder weapons belonged to him. Mostly, Alaric’s memory was quite fuzzy when trying to recall where he was the time of the murders.
Rebecca sees Stefan and Damon at the bar and joins them. Not wanting her input, Damon and Stefan moved to a different area of the bar. She soon follows. Reflecting back to 1912, Damon tells them about a woman named Sage that he met. She was in a boxing ring, knocking men out. Rebecca tells him that she also knew Sage.
Out in the hospital parking lot, Elena confronts Meredith. Meredith tells Elena that she really has no idea who Alaric really was. Telling Elena some of Alaric’s past, Elena tells her that she had to be lying. Meredith tells Elena that since she was dating Vampires, it shouldn’t come as a shock that her guardian was a murderer.
Later, Elena convinces Matt to break into Meredith’s apartment with her. They soon discover a secret hiding place in the closet. They pull out files on the murder victims and one on Alaric. Reading through the files, Matt discovers that the Coroner put the wrong time of death on the report.
Elena finds an old Gilbert journal but before she can read it, they hear Meredith entering the room. Shutting the closet door, they try to be silent until they hear Meredith leave. Opening the closet door, they are surprised when they see Meredith standing there.
At the Mystic Grill, Damon talks about how he first became friends with Sage. He was feeding one night and as the woman’s lifeless body hit the ground, he turned around to find Sage watching him.
She tells him that he was doing it all wrong. There was no need to kill his victims. To pick them out carefully. She brings him back to the boxing arena and shows him how to pick out his prey. They both soon see Samantha Gilbert and choose her.
Present time, Damon tries to provoke Stefan into admitting that he was craving human blood. Telling him that he just needed to learn how to control his hunger. Finally Stefan caves in and admits that it was driving him crazy.
Matt and Elena find themselves in Sheriff Forbes office apologizing for breaking into Meredith’s apartment. They tell her about the wrong time of death and she shows them the letter that Meredith just received explaining the error. Sheriff informs them that until the letter was authenticated, Alaric would have to wait in jail.
In a dark parking lot, Damon stops a beautiful blonde woman. He soon compels her not to scream and begins to feed. Once again he tries to provoke Stefan into giving into his hunger and feeding. Stefan tells him no and then Damon tells him that if he doesn’t, Rebecca would gladly finish her off.
Rebecca bends over the woman’s neck but before she bites, Stefan steps in and begins to feed. Damon is able to finally stop Stefan before he goes too far. Turning around, Stefan is shocked when he sees Matt and Elena standing there. Damon tries to tell Elena to relax and that it was just an experiment. Before giving him a chance to explain further, Elena is horrified and runs off. Stefan is sickened about what just happened and leaves.
Finally home, Elena and Matt talk about what they just witnessed. After everything she seen, Elena tells Matt that she still loves Stefan. She also tells him that Damon also just kind of got under her skin and she couldn’t shake him. Matt surprises her when he pulls out the Gilbert journal from his pocket and hands it too her. The two look up when they see Alaric finally arrive home.
In their den, Damon tries to console Stefan and tell him that it will all work out. He explains to Stefan that he will teach him how to restrain himself when drinking from a human.
Stefan tells him that way back in the past, Damon had tried to help him with this too and it ended badly. Remembering the boxing arena, Damon shows Stefan Samantha Gilbert. Once alone with Samantha however, Damon’s plan backfires when he cannot stop Stefan from draining her dry. Feeling like a monster, looking down at Samantha’s lifeless body, Stefan runs off disgusted. Soon began his reign as “The Ripper”.
Damon tries to tell Stefan that now it would be different. He wouldn’t let Stefan walk away. He planned on being with him every minute and helping him through this. Damon wanted to help Stefan control his hunger and not kill his prey. Asking him why he would do this, Damon tells him that he was all he had left.
Answering the door, Alaric is not too happy to see Meredith standing there. Before shutting the door in her face, Meredith pleads with him to let her and explain everything.
Upstairs, Elena continues reading the journal and discovers that Samantha Gilbert wrote that she felt she was going insane. She wrote that she didn’t feel like herself. At this same time at the Salvatore home, Damon and Stefan read their journals and discover that Samantha Gilbert never died when Stefan fed from her. They all came to the realization that she had on the ring that allows them to cheat death.
After showing Alaric the photos of the victims, Meredith tries to explain that he was in fact the murderer. Asking him if he was having black outs or having incidences of lost time.
She explains that she feels he is going insane and believes the ring was the cause of it. Telling him that there was no way he couldn’t be effected in some way when he owned a ring that allowed him to cheat death.
They both look up when they see Elena standing there. She tells him that she thinks Meredith was right.
