“There is a devolution of Rose’s sanity and Rose’s character, as a result of the bite, which brings a lot of danger into Elena’s (Nina Dobrev) world and into everybody else’s world,” says Plec. “The follow up from that is going to be pretty extreme.” And then there’s werewolf Jules (Michaela McManus). “She knows now that Mason’s dead, and she’s going to have something to say about that. What she chooses to do and how she chooses to respond is big and it’s bold, and it takes us for the next couple episodes on a journey that’s pretty intense.”

Should we be more afraid of Klaus or Elijah?
They’re both pretty badass. That’s a good question. Elijah scares the hell out of me because he’s so even-tempered, and he’s a man of honor. Men of honor who just show up and speak very quietly, but can do a lot of damage in an instant, those guys are pretty scary dudes. Klaus right now is just an enigma.

Nobody knows what he looks like, nobody knows who he is. Is the myth greater than the man as the legends become more powerful than the man himself? Or is the legend just the tip of the iceberg? That’s what’s most scary about him. Nobody has any idea what to except. Until we meet, Klaus I think its going to have to be a toss-up.

Fans have been more than happy to offer their picks online. “We like the people on Twitter who are like ‘Alexander Skarsgard has to be Klaus!’ I’m like really? ‘Cause that’s original,” Plec says, laughing. They’re willing to think outside the box. “The big important elements of this character are charisma and gravitas. You’ve got to be able to be afraid of this guy, whether you’re afraid of him because he looks scary or because he’s so charming that the fact that he can snap your neck with his pinky would take you by surprise. So whether he’s an Old Word-flavored guy or new hip, contemporary, speedy kinda guy, that remains to be seen. We’ll see what actor we connect to the most.” The character will make his appearance by season’s end, Plec says.

Overall, what can we expect when the show returns?

We’re going to come to the end of what we’re calling our werewolf chapter, which will really take that story to a really dark place and really change a lot of characters lives, not necessarily in a good way.

We are going to dig deeper into the secrets of our new witches and what Bonnie’s role is going to be in their story, and of course it’s all about the fear of the impending Klaus, and who’s going to be fighting on who’s side, who’s bond is with who, who’s going to betray whom, and is this curse going to be lifted at the hands of a sacrifice that would kill Elena. We’re full steam ahead.

Julie Plec Interview

Interviews

TV Guide has an interview with Julie Plec.

Check it all out here.
She talks about what the show will and will not take from the books.

Here is an excerpt:

Where did Damon’s creepy black crow go?

The pilot of the series was mostly faithful to the first book. One of the big changes, however, was having Damon (Ian Somerhalder) exercise mind control over a scary crow rather than morph into it. But we haven’t seen his pet in a while. Where has his feathered friend gone? Plec says the set-up gave Damon too much power too quickly. “We thought that if we’re starting there, and they can do all this now, where the hell are we going to go?” she says. Also, “it felt a little comic booky and while people really enjoyed it, the same amount of people thought it was cheesy.”

Here is an excerpt:

Jim Halterman: Julie, with the changes for Caroline and Tyler, the addition of the evil Katherine and other new characters, can you talk about making those changes and not shaking things up too much?

Julie Plec: Instinctively, we really believed that turning Caroline into a vampire was a good move and it could have been a good move that people didn’t like but as storytellers we just knew that it was a great move for her character. Tyler, we always knew this was his journey. It just took us a season before we could get it started. Michael is wonderful. He’s smart, he’s committed, he’s passionate about this role and the work he has to do to really deliver and it’s really been a pleasure to give him storylines this year where he can show off his skills.

Here is an excerpt: SPOILERS

JH: Is Tyler finally going to go through ‘the change’ next week?

JP: Tyler is going through his life change, yes. That is really the point of next week’s episode – to finally put him in that situation. It’s a full moon, we’ve been building to it, he’s been terrified of it [and] last night’s episode really showed what he’s in store for and just how awful it is in fact going to be. It’s a boy-becomes-a-man story for him and it’s not fun and it’s painful and he’s really going to go through hell.

Julie Plec gives the LA Times some spoilers of what we can expect to come on season 2.

Here is one (WARNING: SPOILERS)

1. The wolfman cometh:

Tyler (Michael Trevino) will finally wolf out during the Dec. 9 episode. If you think the wait for new episodes will be torturous, the transformation period will be even more torturous for Tyler. “We’ll learn a lot about the mythology and the rules of the transformation over the next two episodes before we actually see it,” says Plec. “You’ll learn that while it gets a little bit easier the more you do it, the first time is not easy.” She adds that the show will not shy away from that painful process. “We wanted to show that in its entirety and really make the most of that because it’s a very, very difficult thing that Tyler is going have to go through and we wanted the audience to be able to experience it with him for the first time.”
The experience will be “pretty life altering for [Tyler] in a lot of ways” and have far-reaching effects. “What happens after that is going to be a big part of what happens in Mystic Falls, and how our other characters get involved in Tyler’s story,” says Plec. “A lot of secrets start to come out and it becomes very complicated after he turns.”
