What do you think Katherine is up to with the moonstone and needing a werewolf?
I wish I knew. [Laughs] I wish I knew what she was doing.
Mason put the moonstone in a well full of vervain.
Yeah. He doesn’t trust [Katherine].
Do you think he was trying to keep it away from Katherine in particular?
I think anyone in general. It’s like, what’s the one safe place? I think he knew Tyler wasn’t going to go fishing for it. He gave it to him. It was in safe keep there. It was somewhere on the property where he knew he could get to. It is exactly that. He didn’t want her to find out. Or he didn’t want Stefan or Damon to find out. It was probably the safest place he could think of. He should have put it in his pocket.

It was obvious that he really loved Katherine, but how much do you think he really knew about her past and her capabilities?
I don’t think it really matters! It’s a “love is blind” thing. Whenever you fall in love with somebody, and you have that connection, everything goes out the window. You forgive them all their faults. That’s what it is. To take it a step further would be to open up and let her in completely, which he hasn’t done. That’s the only thing that gets in the way, the trust issue. It doesn’t stop him from loving her, but he got burned by it. He dropped his guard for a minute, threw all his chips down, and then he had to eat it. He had to pay the piper.

Can you talk a little bit more about the flashbacks that are coming up? Is there any chance we’re going to go back any further than the 19th Century?
JP: Oh yeah. In fact, let’s see, the episode that we start shooting on Tuesday is set, if I’m not mistaken, around 1490. We talked a little bit about that in the panel wanting to show Katherine’s origin story, and it’s cool.
KW: 1492 in Bulgaria. We go back in time and show a lot about how Katherine became who she was. We answer a lot of questions, basically. I don’t know if anyone’s interested about the doppelganger, or how did the line continue if it ended with her. She’s the Petrova. We get into the Petrova line of it all. So we kind of go down that road and we sort of flashback to 1492 Bulgaria. We show how she started, where she went, why they wanted her, why she was necessary to the story of the vampires.

But that’s probably not going to happen in “Plan B,” the episode airing at 7 p.m. Oct. 21 on WGN. The vampire-despising Bonnie does deal with her strained relationships to BFFs Elena (Nina Dobrev) and Caroline (Candice Accola). Despite their differences–Elena dates hottie vamp Stefan Salvatore (Paul Wesley), and Caroline has become a vamp–Bonnie still will help them, Graham said.
“I think Bonnie is all about protecting and loving her friends,” the 21-year-old said. “She’s going to do what she has to do to protect the ones she loves, no matter what.”
